Historically, Turkey and Japan have been maintaining and strengthening their friendly relationship since the Ertuğrul Fırkateyni accident in 1890. At the time of the Iran–Iraq War from 1980 till 1988 (the First Persian Gulf War), as all the Japanese then living in Iran were attempting to escape the country, many kind people from Turkey, including the late Mr. Turgut Özal, then President of Turkey, provided us with tremendous kindness and thoughtfulness, which many of us Japanese still remember warmly to this day. We are also aware of ‘Japan Year 2010 in Turkey’ which was held in Turkey in 2010 and involved a wide variety of exchange programs between Japan and Turkey. In the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, we were provided with wonderful support from the disaster-relief team dispatched by the Turkish government.
